Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
