New research reveals that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using such medications need to be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
