Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
