Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
