American Military Operation on Caracas Stokes Anxieties of Potential Greenland Annexation.

The latest US-led strike in Venezuela and the detention of its president have ignited apprehension regarding Washington's ambitions on Greenland. Members of the former president's political movement have reportedly turned their attention to the strategically important landmass in the wake of the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Only hours following the start of the Caracas campaign, a prominent conservative commentator, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential adviser, shared a suggestive map. The graphic showed Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by cryptic caption: "COMING."

This blatant suggestion to annex the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered immediate and firm condemnation from Danish officials.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should keep cooperate as such. American security is equally the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the US collaborate to ensure security in the North."

The diplomat additionally highlighted that Denmark had significantly increased its military budget recently, allocating a substantial amount expressly for Arctic and regional security. "Furthermore, we demand complete recognition for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he emphasized.

Administrative Moves and Strategic Goals

The situation were additionally complicated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The governor had publicly expressed gratitude to the president, saying it was an "privilege" to serve in a unpaid role to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this representative commended the president's decisive move, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the American leader has consistently alarmed transatlantic partners with his stated desire in Greenland. The territory is considered critically strategic for defence and potential resource extraction. It currently houses the northernmost US air base.

Leaving the Door Open to Force

In a significant media appearance, the leader refused to exclude the use of armed action to gain control of Greenland. This position comes during growing great-power rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Mounting Tensions and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this constant "rhetoric" of intent, Denmark's security agency took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland delivered a joint and forceful statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a complex sentiment. While a vast majority of the territory's residents desire independence from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously little to no appetite to become part of the United States. The territory has had the legal right to seek sovereignty for over a decade.

Analyst View: A Plausible Threat?

Military experts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a action. One thinktank analyst specializing in defence conceded she had previously discounted the sabre-rattling but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a few hundred or a couple thousand soldiers on Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could intervene about it," she observed.
